Dear Member of the United States Senate:

The Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) strongly supports action by the Congress to forcefully and effectively attack the opioid crisis. Beyond the distressing human toll that the opioid crisis and deadly fentanyl have placed upon our families and country, America’s workforce is being wounded and drained due to opioid dependency and abuse. Therefore, our members are pleased that the Senate is expected to act on a package of bills this week, which includes the Synthetics Trafficking and Overdose Protection Act (STOP ACT), S.372.  SBE Council strongly supports the STOP Act, included within the broader package of bills that will strengthen the nation’s collective response to the opioid crisis.

Dangerous individuals from abroad are shipping deadly fentanyl and other illicit materials into the U.S. through the U.S. postal system, and the STOP Act will help to stem this poisonous and unlawful flow. The STOP Act would require that shipments from foreign countries delivered through the U.S. postal service have advanced electronic data (AED) identifying, for example, the sender, recipient and contents of a package – a requirement that private shippers must currently abide by. This needed tool would not only deter the shipment of deadly opioids into our country, it would also help to prevent foreign bad actors from shipping other unchecked counterfeit goods into the U.S., which has a serious negative impact on America’s small businesses and entrepreneurs.

For the sake of our citizens, economy and national security, the deadly pipeline of fentanyl must be plugged. The technology to significantly curb this flow is readily available, and the STOP Act requires that it be utilized by the U.S. Postal Service.

SBE Council and our members urge you to vote for this important legislative package. The STOP Act, in particular, is needed to cut off the flow of deadly fentanyl which is critical to getting the crises under control. The bill will prevent bad actors from using the U.S. postal system in ways that harm our national security, economic strength and the health and well-being of American citizens.

Thank you, in advance, for your support of America’s small businesses and entrepreneurs, and their hardworking families and community members.

Sincerely,

Karen Kerrigan, President & CEO
