WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) commended President Trump’s creation of the new Task Force on the United States Postal Service (USPS). The Administration’s Executive Order, announced on April 13, appropriately takes aim at the Postal Service’s deteriorating fiscal condition, which is on “an unsustainable financial path and must be restructured to prevent a taxpayer-funded bailout.”

SBE Council president & CEO Karen Kerrigan said:

“There are significant and long-standing concerns surrounding the practices of the U.S. Postal Service that have been harmful to small businesses. President Trump’s new task force appears well positioned to bring much needed accountability and transparency to their operations. For example, the agreements of the Postal Service, which provide services in the competitive marketplace, have been shielded from public view. It is critical that the task force focus on reforms that ensure a level playing field for all users of the Postal Service, and certify that USPS’ diversions from its core letter mail service are contributing positively to their balance sheet.”

Furthermore, SBE Council believes that the task force has an excellent opportunity to address a longstanding concern of small business owners who struggle to compete against foreign shippers that are afforded unique pricing advantages for their deliveries to U.S. destinations.

Kerrigan stated, “It is disheartening that the Postal Service leadership has failed to seek changes to international mail prices, which have resulted in millions of annual losses, while also leaving American small businesses at a major disadvantage. America’s entrepreneurs and small businesses should not have to continue to compete with the influx of shipments from abroad that are subsidized by the Postal Service.”

Ultimately, according to Kerrigan, it will be critical for the new postal task force to instill management practices that will help the U.S. Postal Service become a more sustainable and pragmatic operation going forward.
