On September 25, the U.S. House unanimously passed S. 791.

This bipartisan, bicameral legislation is the Senate companion bill to H.R. 2655, which passed the House in July and was led by Rep. Dwight Evans (D-PA) and Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA).  S. 971 was introduced by Senators Jim Risch (R-ID) and Gary Peters (D-MI).

The “Small Business Innovation Act” aims to help small businesses safeguard their intellectual property (IP) with expanded education on obtaining and protecting patents. It will build upon existing outreach programs run by the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

S. 971 was signed into law by President Trump on October 9, 2018.
