Advocate for Entrepreneurs Praises President’s ‘Call to Action’ for Bipartisanship and Common Sense Solutions

Washington, D.C. – The nation’s leading advocate for entrepreneurs and small businesses congratulated President Donald Trump on his State of the Union speech, especially his call for new relationships and strategies to resolve America’s most pressing challenges.  According to Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) president & CEO Karen Kerrigan, President Trump has outlined a vision and “call to action” where bipartisanship is possible, and in fact needed to advance policies that are critical to healthy entrepreneurship and small business growth.

“Entrepreneurs are hopeful that every member of Congress will ‘choose greatness’ for America by heeding the call of President Trump and work across the aisle on solutions that bring more Americans opportunities for financial security and personal fulfillment. Bipartisanship is absolutely needed on a range of issues to sustain economic growth, provide affordable health coverage, strengthen our workforce, and to unlock small business and entrepreneurial opportunity everywhere. We applaud President Trump for his sense of urgency and for encouraging bipartisan action on a wide range of policy issues to keep the American economy moving in a positive direction,” said Kerrigan.

According to Kerrigan, the environment for bipartisan action on small business priorities is very good, as a slate of 7 bills has already passed the U.S. House on voice vote or on a wide bipartisan basis in January. In addition, there is plenty of “low hanging legislative fruit” that is solidly bipartisan and will help to address the pain points of small businesses.

“We are pleased that President Trump prioritized high health coverage costs in his speech. A strongly bipartisan solution has already been introduced in the U.S Senate (S. 172), which would relieve the self-employed, small businesses and their employees from the costly health insurance tax. This sales tax on the insurance plans of small businesses is grossly unfair, and passing S. 172 right away would mean significant cost relief for entrepreneurs and their employees. This common-sense bill, which requires immediate action, is exactly the kind of solution that President Trump called for in his State of the Union speech,” said Kerrigan.

Kerrigan also noted other key areas for bipartisanship, including access to capital, broadband deployment, tax simplification and modernization, the workforce shortage and related challenges, opening global markets, and an infrastructure package, among other issues. Regarding access to global markets, Kerrigan said that the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) is a win for entrepreneurs and small businesses, as it will further lower barriers to trade with Mexico and Canada, while modernizing key parts of NAFTA.  She urged every member of Congress to get behind passage of this important agreement.

“Strengthening existing trade relationships — and aggressively forging new ones — would be a huge boost in terms of giving small businesses the green light they need to grow through global markets. The more access small businesses have to niche markets in other countries, the more competitive they are globally, and the more they can expand at home. USMCA strengthens intellectual property protections, eliminates barriers to e-commerce by raising the minimum cost of shipment subject to taxes in both Canada and Mexico, opens borders for digital commerce, and modernizes customs procedures. Chapter 25 of the agreement is dedicated to small business issues, providing a platform for small firms to identify and address other barriers. We fully support President Trump’s call for congressional passage on USMCA. Again, it is an issue that should receive wide bipartisan support,” said Kerrigan.
