“IP rights and protections are foundational to bold entrepreneurship and small business growth.”

Washington, D.C.  –  April 26 is World Intellectual Property (IP) Day, and the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) is collaborating with organizations and thinks tanks both in the U.S. and globally to emphasize the importance of strong IP rights to the growth of global entrepreneurship, strong economic growth, and the innovations that improve lives across the world.

“IP rights are foundational to bold entrepreneurship and small business growth. Protecting and strengthening IP encourages innovators to do what they do best, and for capital to flow to the businesses and entrepreneurs that will bring these promising innovations and ideas to market. It is incredibly satisfying to see heightened awareness and meaningful action taken in many parts of the world to protect IP. In the end, IP rights spur human ingenuity and positive economic activity and it is essential that innovators and entrepreneurs everywhere are unleashed to produce more of both,” said SBE Council president & CEO Karen Kerrigan.

SBE Council joined a coalition of 77 organizations from 39 countries and signed an Open Letter to World International Property Organization (WIPO) Director General Francis Gurry about the importance of IP and thanking him for his work. The letter reviews the central role IP rights play in boosting trade, growing economies, spurring innovation, and fighting counterfeits and piracy. As noted in the letter:

“Whether it is a new life-saving medicine, a catchy tune, or distinguishing mark, all intellectual properties are products of ingenuity and human labor. In this regard, intellectual property rights are fundamental human rights that ensure innovators have control over the fruits of their labor. We applaud all of your efforts as Director General of WIPO to fulfill the organization’s primary purpose ‘to promote the protection of intellectual property throughout the world.’”

President Donald J. Trump also issued a 2019 World IP Day proclamation, emphasizing the central role IP plays in U.S. innovation and our growing economy:

“Our free market continues to unleash the imagination of our Nation’s talented creators, inventors, and entrepreneurs, enabling them to develop products that improve and elevate lives across our country and around the world.  To maintain and reinforce our economic competitiveness, we must protect intellectual property and related technologies so that new industries and innovations can flourish.”

SBE Council continues to work on educational, legislative and other initiatives to strengthen IP. This is especially critical in trade agreements, which the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) addresses quite effectively and is one of many reasons why it is essential that Congress approve this important agreement.
