Morning Consult Op-ed: USPS Needs to Support the Small Businesses They Claim to Serve

In a Morning Consult Op-ed on June 10, SBE Council president & CEO Karen Kerrigan wrote about the “sad financial story of the U. S. Postal Service.” In just the latest quarter alone, the Postal Service had a loss of $2.1 billion. For all of 2018, the agency lost $3.9 billion. As Kerrigan noted in the piece, such poor financial performance matched with substandard customer service does not serve the small business community well:

“In 2018, the Postal Service did not meet on-time delivery targets for every single product segment within its ‘First-Class Mail’ umbrella of services. This pitiful reality affects the competitiveness and bottom line of many small businesses. It impacts their ability to effectively communicate with customers, promote products, market their businesses, fulfill orders, complete billing, invoicing and much more. Not everything and everybody operates in the digital economy (at least not yet).”

Kerrigan urged the adoption of key Postal Service reforms, including transparency in financials and pricing, a sound business plan, and fundamentals such as producing a P&L statement so that Congress can properly provide oversight.
