Washington, D.C. – Today, on this “USMCA Day of Action” that is calling on Congress to pass the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), a leading advocate for entrepreneurs and small businesses is urging every Member of Congress to fully read the agreement to understand how it benefits America’s small business community.  The Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) will re-double its education efforts and is sending all Capitol Hill offices a USMCA Fact Sheet that outlines how the agreement will boost entrepreneurship and the growth of small businesses.

SBE Council president & CEO Karen Kerrigan said:

“In every way USMCA is an outstanding agreement for entrepreneurs and small businesses. The biggest barriers to expanding globally are market access, costs, red tape and uncertainties related to the potential theft of intellectual property. USMCA addresses all these critical issues and modernizes NAFTA to reflect digital economy realities. Moreover, as we note in our USMCA Fact Sheet, entrepreneurs and small businesses are given a permanent ‘voice’ through this agreement, the goal of which is to identify unforeseen or emerging barriers to trade while assisting entrepreneurs access these markets.”

As SBE Council notes in the Fact Sheet, USMCA is “tailor-made” for small businesses. The agreement lowers barriers and costs associated with doing business across borders, removes outdated requirements and red tape, creates parity with regard to market access, protects the intellectual property (IP) of small businesses and entrepreneurs, and includes a specific small business chapter that offers tools to help entrepreneurs do business in Canada and Mexico. The chapter also establishes a permanent stakeholder platform providing entrepreneurs the opportunity to offer continuous feedback on improving USMCA and market access for small firms.

“We are pleased the Administration continues to discuss the agreement with congressional leaders on both sides of the aisle. Many of the issues they are discussing have been effectively addressed by the agreement with respect to the enforcement of labor and environmental standards.  The bottom line is that increased trade with Canada and Mexico will result in quality job growth and higher wages within this powerful trade zone, and the environment will continue to benefit from the innovations we share.  Moreover, USMCA will boost entrepreneurship and small business growth in all countries, which is good news for our economies and its residents. It’s time for Congress to pass USMCA now,” added Kerrigan.
