Washington, D.C. – In response to President Trump’s announcement on the formation of the “Governors’ Initiative on Regulatory Innovation” taskforce, Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) president & CEO Karen Kerrigan issued the following statement:

“Entrepreneurship and small business growth are undermined by complex, burdensome and inconsistent regulation. Barriers can especially be profound at the state and local level, where entrepreneurs looking to start businesses or explore expansion opportunities across state or jurisdictional lines are often prevented from doing so because of outdated or patchy regulatory systems that raise compliance and business costs.  We applaud President Trump’s creation of the ‘Governors’ Initiative on Regulatory Innovation,’ as a collaborative approach will be an effective one for identifying barriers and rules that can be streamlined, updated or harmonized. A focus on occupational licensing reform, for example, will provide entrepreneurial freedom to individuals with highly mobile lifestyles who will be able to more easily use their skills within another state to either start a business or work for a small business. There are a range of tax and regulatory issues that can be addressed by the taskforce, especially as they relate to the U.S. workforce.

“With entrepreneurship improving but still below historical growth levels, elected officials and political leaders need to be doing all they can to identify barriers to startup activity. Efforts at the federal level have dramatically reduced regulation and have made the regulatory system more accountable and transparent, which continues to have a positive effect on business confidence and the U.S. economy. We applaud President Trump and his team on their range of initiatives that have significantly reduced regulation and red tape. The most recent Executive Order that aims to shine a light on and clean up regulatory ‘dark matter’ is especially important to small businesses. SBE Council looks forward to our continued work with the new Governors’ taskforce and the Trump administration in general on ways to transform and improve  the U.S. regulatory system.”
