Washington, D.C. – On February 4, President Donald J. Trump will deliver his annual State Of the Union address, and the nation’s leading advocacy group for small businesses and entrepreneurs said the president’s theme for the speech – “The Great American Comeback” – is an appropriate one given the high optimism small business owners feel and the critical role entrepreneurs have played in that comeback by powering the economy forward. As noted by Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) president & CEO Karen Kerrigan, the agenda President Trump will lay out before the nation on Tuesday night must focus on sustaining economic momentum and optimism, while lighting a fire under entrepreneurial risk-taking.

“Small business owners and entrepreneurs continue to feel very optimistic about the economy, and the ‘relentless optimism’ that President Trump will speak about in his address has carried our economy in good times and in bad. Regulatory relief and stability, tax cuts and friendly business policies in general have helped to fuel growth along with investment and innovation in the energy sector, and access to quality broadband. These are all critical to fueling small business growth and success.  Pro-investment policies lead to strong economic growth, and these policies must continue – in fact the President must double-down – in order to turbo-charge entrepreneurial risk-taking among more Americans.

“Our hope is that the President pledges to maintain a relentless focus on pro-growth policies, which will keep the ‘blue-collar boom’ growing and encourage more people to start their own businesses. This is a critical area that has seen some positive movement with Administration policies. Still, startup activity remains tepid. It is a problem, however, that stretches back 15 plus years. A focus on improving capital markets and access to capital, additional reforms in the health care area that address high costs and surprise billing, permanent tax relief and simplicity, opening new markets across the globe by inking additional trade agreements and lowering tariff costs, continuous improvement on modernizing and lifting regulatory burdens, staying away from new regulation that would undermine the platform-based economy, a national framework on privacy, and immigration policy reform to help meet the deep holes in the workforce are all needed to improve the environment for entrepreneurship and strong small business growth. Small business owners and entrepreneurs look forward to the President’s speech along with his policy plans to help them pursue growth opportunities by continuing to address their top challenges.”
