Small Business Advocate Applauds Bold Actions Taken by FCC to Support Broadband Investment and Connectivity, Faster 5G Deployment

Washington, D.C.  – Today, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) acted on four orders that are of great importance to small businesses and entrepreneurs nationwide. According to Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) president & CEO Karen Kerrigan the advancement of these orders will continue the long streak of policy initiatives and actions taken by the FCC that support the growth and resiliency of the digital economy and networks, which have become a lifeline for millions of small businesses – especially during COVID-19.

“There is no overstating the importance of the orders advanced by the FCC today. Taken together, these orders will accelerate access and the availability of fast, higher-quality internet connectivity for small businesses, especially in underserved areas and rural America,” said Kerrigan.

The orders advanced include the establishment a 5G fund for rural America, increasing unlicensed wireless opportunities in TV white spaces, a Restoring Internet Freedom Order remand, and the streamlining of state and local approval of certain wireless structure modifications to further accelerate the deployment of 5G. In addition, the FCC acted upon an order to expand audio description requirements to 40 additional television markets over the next four years “to increase the amount of video programming that is accessible to blind and visually impaired Americans.”

Kerrigan added:

“Under Chairman Ajit Pai’s leadership, the FCC continues to take bold actions that will increase access and opportunity for all Americans. These orders will provide small businesses and entrepreneurs in rural and underserved areas with today’s most critical tool – high-quality, fast internet – to connect them to the digital economy, new markets, and tools to grow and innovate. Under the pro-investment and pro-innovation policies pursued by this FCC, broadband speeds are faster, prices have gone down, more people have access, and our networks during COVID-19 have proven to be resilient and strong under the stress of high demand. In addition, America is leading on 5G rollout and innovation.”

Kerrigan concludes:

“Small business owners and entrepreneurs nationwide thank Chairman Pai and his fellow commissioners who voted to advance these orders. Especially during COVID-19, small businesses have rapidly moved more of their operations to the cloud and technology platforms. Their successful pivot was made possible due to the durability and quality of U.S. networks. Their survival is now tied to a digital ecosystem that invests, improves, innovates and is able to quickly respond to market demands and changes. Regulatory certainty, and specifically the continuation of a light-touch regulatory framework, will allow the private sector to keep doing what it is doing very well.”
