Washington, D.C. – The following statement can be attributed to Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) president & CEO Karen Kerrigan regarding the certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the Electoral College by Congress that followed the siege on the U.S. Capitol yesterday:

“The events that unfolded on Capitol Hill yesterday caused by a destructive and unlawful mob were horrifying to observe. Every individual involved with the dangerous and subversive siege must be held fully accountable, and we can only be grateful that more lives were not lost. America’s business owners and their employees are appreciative that Congress quickly resumed its duties to demonstrate that the violent actions directed at disrupting a critical step in what has always been a peaceful transfer of power would not deter their work or undermine our democracy. We thank Vice President Pence for his leadership.

“Moving forward and as President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris continue to prepare to undertake their duties during these uncertain times, I urge all Members of Congress to hone their civil discourse skills as they work to solve our nation’s challenges. As many Members demonstrated in their remarks on the House and Senate floor yesterday evening and during the early morning hours – as well as throughout America’s history – it is possible to be passionate and principled without inflaming hatred and violence.

“President Trump can no longer fan the flames that undercut the peaceful transfer of power. He must step aside if he is incapable of demonstrating the type of fully developed and servant leadership that our great nation deserves.”
