Washington, D.C. – In response to President Joe’s Biden’s national address and the “American Families Plan” and “American Jobs Plan,” Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) president & CEO Karen Kerrigan issued the following response:

“Small business owners and entrepreneurs can certainly empathize with the enormous challenge faced by President Biden upon taking office and during this critical period of time. Main Street business owners and entrepreneurs have weathered enormous challenges themselves throughout the pandemic, and are working hard to dig out of the economic hole and devastation of the past year. Their success will be central to bringing our economy back to full health, and they are hopeful given the pace of vaccinations and lifting of restrictions across the country. However, small businesses face a rocky and uncertain road ahead.

“Therefore, they need policies to support and fuel their recovery. Our economy needs policies that encourage risk-taking and entrepreneurship. While the robust nature of the American Jobs Plan And American Families Plan are impressive and include some policies we can support, core policy initiatives within these plans would harm entrepreneurship and small business growth, and undermine the private investment that is needed to fuel the current momentum that could bring our economy back to full health. The PRO Act, touted by President Biden, and proposed tax increases will snuff out growth and the dynamic environment needed to start and build successful small businesses – the very businesses that are responsible for creating jobs, jobs, jobs.

“Entrepreneurs, small businesses and their dedicated workers also built this country and our economy. Policies need to encourage their ideas, growth, risk-taking and job creation. We will continue to work across the aisle and with the Administration to advance balanced policy that recognizes the pain points and opportunities faced by entrepreneurs and small businesses.”
