Washington, D.C. – This week has been designated as “National Small Business Week” via a proclamation announced by President Joe Biden and a resolution passed by Congress.  Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) president & CEO Karen Kerrigan issued the following statement regarding the marking of this week by the White House and Congress:

“As noted by President Biden’s proclamation, the pandemic ‘exacted an incalculable toll not only on lives and livelihoods, but on far too many small business dreams and family legacies.’ That is correct, and unfortunately the pandemic and its challenges are far from being over. That is why both the President and all members of Congress need to fully understand and consider how proposed policies will impact the livelihood and survivability of these small businesses, their workers and local economies.

“It’s nice that politicians talk about their support and love of small businesses by issuing proclamations and resolutions. Thank you. But it’s more important that action on policy match the supportive words of these official statements.  At a time when many small businesses remain on the edge of closing, President Biden and Congress need to provide certainty in the business environment. Unfortunately, we see the opposite occurring via higher taxes, increased regulatory burdens, and massive new government spending. These types of policies are totally out of touch with what our economy and private sector need to dig out of the past year and a half, and to navigate the uncertain days ahead.  We appreciate members of President’s party who have urged caution, restraint, and study on critical policy matters. These voices are most certainly aligned with those of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners who are alarmed by the tidal wave of anti-growth policies coming out of Washington.

“We urge President Biden and members of Congress to engage with and listen to small business owners during this ‘National Small Business Week.’  The input of small business would help shape the sound policies that are needed to more effectively weather what is left of the pandemic and establish a strong foundation for recovery.”
