Kerrigan in Inside Sources: Congress, President Need a Small Business Reality Check

In an Inside Sources Op-ed, SBE Council president & CEO Karen Kerrigan writes that President Biden and Congress appear out-of-touch with what is happening with small businesses and on Main Street. While the White House regular touts the fact that people are filing new business applications in record numbers, an important trend that could be leveraged to solidify an entrepreneurial boom with policies that “promote growth in the face of continuing uncertainty…Instead, they have used competition and innovation as a cover to penalize the very business practices they claim to promote.”

Kerrigan notes that archaic and static thinking are driving the harmful policies being pursued on Capitol Hill and within the Administration. She writes that the economy is actually very dynamic with new businesses being created across sectors, and consumers preferring “a mix of options that allow them to combine offline and online shopping seamlessly.”

She adds:

“Congress has not grasped the reality that consumers are benefitting from more choice and convenience than ever before. Legislation such as the “American Innovation and Choice Online Act” would replace what consumers want and like with what politicians and government regulators think would work better.”

Kerrigan warns legislators and policymakers to be careful and knowledgeable about the consequences of upending the digital ecosystem and its tools that are complimenting the work of small business owners as they strive to meet the needs of consumers who are benefitting from the online-offline synergies meeting these consumer needs:

“The digital tools and platforms entrepreneurs are using have vastly lowered barriers to entry while increasing access to consumers. Lawmakers should not only recognize but also promote this exciting retail dynamic on Main Street. If Congress and Biden administration regulators move forward with punitive, misguided policies aimed at ‘big tech’ that actually hurt consumers and business owners, they could take down the dreams of many entrepreneurs who are using digital tools to effectively compete with big players across many industry sectors.”
