Washington, D.C. – Today, the House Energy and Commerce Committee will act on five pieces of legislation, including the “Extending America’s Spectrum Leadership Act of 2022” (H.R. 7783), which reauthorizes the Federal Communication Commission’s (FCC’s) spectrum auction authority for 1.5 years. Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) president & CEO Karen Kerrigan issued the following statement in support of the legislation:

“Access to quality broadband and bringing 5G connectivity and tools to entrepreneurs and small business owners everywhere require a foundational element that allows for the delivery of digital connectivity and tools – and that key piece is spectrum.  The FCC’s spectrum auction authority is expiring soon, which means potential long-term delays for delivering broadband and 5G to local communities and businesses. This is an outcome that is unacceptable, as it will harm economic growth and undermine efforts for recovery and economic development in many parts of the country.

“Action on H.R. 7783 is a must, as this short-term extension would allow the FCC to continue its work on auctioning licenses while providing Congress time to develop a spectrum pipeline for future auctions.

“During this period of economic uncertainty and inflationary pressure on small businesses and families, Congress must do all it can to support innovation and bring tools and resources to businesses that can drive efficiency and lower costs. Access to broadband and next-generation connectivity is critical to this end. Congress cannot allow the upcoming expiration of the FCC’s spectrum auction authority to delay 5G and broadband connectivity any longer. Other nations continue to plow forward, and so must the U.S. in order to remain competitive and retain innovative leadership.”
